“What do you mean by 'try before you buy'?”
You could take on a student for a four week work placement (one day per week for four weeks or as a block - we'll sort it out to suit you!). At the end of the work placement, you can decide if you want to continue to employ the student in a part-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
“If I decide to continue to employ a student, is this like having an apprentice?”
Yes. The main difference is that the first year of the apprenticeship is completed over two years at the school. The benefit to you is that you only have to employ the student part-time over this two year period, which gives you the chance to make sure they are right for you and that you can work well together.
“So what happens at the end of the two years?”
You can choose to take on the apprentice for the second year of the apprenticeship (remember, the first year actually takes two years of study at the school), as you would any other second year apprentice. The good thing is, you have had two years of working with them for one day (or more) a week to decide if they are right for the job!
“Are there financial incentives?”
Yes, there are many financial incentives available if you take on a part-time apprentice or trainee. Follow the ‘incentives’ link for more information.
“How often will I have my apprentice working with me?”
This is flexible and can be arranged to suit you and your work. Generally, one day per week for the two years of the course and full-time during school holiday periods. You can also make arrangements with your apprentice for them to in a block of time or on weekends and during the school holidays, if you need them. Since our students are so keen to work and get experience in the trade, they will be available to take any extra opportunities to work.
“What will I have to pay them?”
Wages for apprentices vary depending on your industry. We would be happy to let you know exactly what wage you would pay your apprentice, just call Chris Lear on 02 4365 3399 or email Chris for further information. Alternatively, contact the Group Training Company that you have used for other apprentices.
